Dubai to Build World's Largest Indoor Ski Slope
Never one to let their surroundings stop them from pursuing their dreams, Dubai has announced extravagant plans to build the world’s largest indoor ski resort with a 1.2km run.
Already home to the world’s tallest building, biggest shopping mall and largest man-made island, Dubai is set to add world’s largest indoor ski slope as well as tallest residential tower, highest restaurant and largest dancing fountain to their long list of records under the elaborate Meydan One Project.
The development which will extend from the Meydan race track to the world’s highest tower, the Burj Khalifa, will feature a 1.2 km long ski slope which will knock current record holder, the Alpincenter in Germany off the top spot. The indoor ski slope will be double the length of the current longest indoor slope and almost seven times as long as the UK’s best effort at the Chill Factor in Manchester. The slope will run year round and will be Dubai’s second indoor ski resort. The first phase of the 440-million-square-foot complex known as Meydan One is set to be completed before 2020 at an estimated cost of $6.8 billion.
Unlike Dubai, the UK doesn’t boast the largest indoor ski centre in the world however it does have an array of ski slopes and indoor snow centres which provide the perfect opportunity for a pre-season warm up or beginner lessons before a school ski trip. If you live down south in the London area you have the excellent Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead which features a 160m real snow slope. However if you live up north, the Chill Factore in Manchester features the UK’s longest indoor real snow slope at 180m and finally if you live in the Midlands you have the Snowdome in Tamworth.
