The Inspirational Story of Jenny Jones

From the slopes to the podium, it has been a year since Jenny Jones won Britain’s first ever Olympic medal on the snow at Sotchi last year winning bronze in the women’s snowboard slope-style.

Lying fifth after her first run, Jones dramatically scored 87.25 with a superbly executed second run which at the time was enough to take her into first place and bring an agonising wait as 10 rivals took on the challenging course complete with giant Russian doll. With Jones barely able to watch and the BBC Sport commentary box struggling to hold back their excitement, tension grew as each boarder did their very best to knock Jones out of the medal positions. Sitting in the bronze medal position and with two riders remaining, Jones could only look on as Switzerland’s Isabel Derungs and Austria’s Anna Gasser made their final attempt to get on the podium. However Jones score was enough to end Great Britain’s 90 year wait for an Olympic medal on the slopes with both riders making costly errors. Three times X Games champion Jones could not believe the dramatic finale to the event and gasped in amazement “I absolutely did not think I would ever be in this position back then, when I was a chalet maid.”

Jones’s bronze medal brings a timely end to Great Britain’s 90 year wait for a medal on the slopes since the inaugural Winter Games in 1924. The introduction of ski and snowboard slope-style to the Olympic programme has opened up medal opportunities for a new wave of British athletes such as James Woods and Jamie Nicholls who have been brought up on dry slopes, indoor ski domes and most noticeably school ski trips. With resources limited in the UK for skiers and snowboarders, school ski trips are becoming an essential prerequisite if Great Britain is ever going to produce more medal hopes. Sochi was a game changer for Team GB who left Russia with their best medal tally ever and success in Sochi has put winter sports firmly on the map back home in the UK.

1 year on from Sochi and Jenny Jones’ bronze medal, demand for winter sports is at an all-time high and what better way to capitalise on this inspirational story than by organising a school ski trip to unlock the future potential of your students.
