2015 Ski Season Snow Report

The 2015 Ski Season has finally arrived with fresh snow falling across Europe to the delight of our school groups.

Both the Alps and the Pyrenees have been transformed over the past seven days following almost a week of constant heavy snowfall. School Ski trips are now good to go!!!!

Having visited Andorra at the start of January both Vallnord and Grandvalira were building snow depths gradually through a relatively uncharactersistic dry period. However the snow coverage in Vallnord and Grandvalira has greatly improved recently contributing to impressive snow depths on both higher and lower slopes for this time of year. With a metre of snow expected later this week skiers can look forward to deep dry powder at all elevations.

Out of all the Alpine nations, Austria has faired the best receiving more snow than anyone else in the past week. This has given rise to excellent snow depths allowing for good skiing at all elevations. The conditions across Austria right now are fantastic and our resorts of Zell-am-See, BKK and Kitzbuhel are now recording much better snow depths at upper levels.  Further powder is expected in Austria which will help to freshen and improve the pistes.

Conditions are the best they have been all winter in France with heavy snowfall moving over the French Alps in the recent weeks. It has been a slow start to the season in France but snow depths are now starting to get what we expect at this time of the year. Resorts we offer in France such as St Gervais and Chatel have received a fresh covering of snow making for excellent conditions and deeper snow depths. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the next week giving our school ski groups excellent conditions for the upcoming February half term.

Italian resorts have received comparatively less snow that those in the Northern Alps in the past few weeks but snow is starting to fall and excellent conditions are expected for next week. There was recent snowfall at the start of the weekend with around 10cm being recorded which has freshened up the pistes significantly. Heavy snow forecasted is predicted for the higher resorts such as Passo Tonale which is already boasting an upper snow depth of 400cm.

Despite a slow start to the season like the rest of Europe, heavy snow continues to fall on Switzerland with well over a metre recorded in parts of the north and western Swizz Alps. This has made for excellent conditions and snow depths that we would expect for this time of year. With more snow on the way and sub-zero temperatures at resort level, Switzerland is the place to be for a school ski trip. Our premier resort Chateau d’Oex has 95cm of relatively fresh powder on the upper slopes and 60cm at the base.
