Bad Kleinkirchheim

Bad Kleinkircheim, or BKK, is a favourite of downhill skiers Franz Klammer, and also a favourite for many school ski groups.  It is a friendly resort with some excellent runs of mixed ability.  Snow coverage is good and lifts are modern.  With some wonderful spas, and a wonderful welcome from your hosts at the Blue Mountain Hotel, BKK works so well as a school ski trip destination!

The Skiing…

Tucked away on the Nock Mountain National Park, BKK sits close to the Italian and Slovenian borders in the south-east of Austria.  Slopes are 75% intermediate standard runs and mostly wooded.  Pistes in BKK are reached from two main lifts, a two-stage gondola which leads to the areas high-point of Kaiserburg, whilst a fast quad lift whisks you to the other end of the mountain at Maibrunn.  Once at the top of either, you can ski down to the same mid-station making lunch-time logistics easy.  The Maibrunn access leads to further pistes at the Nockalm slopes which lead to neighbouring slopes of St Oswald, also included on your lift pass.  From St Oswald, there is further access to Brunnach, in addition to another gondola between BKK and St Oswald.  All-in-all, BKK is one of the best connected resorts in Austria, and although many lifts are not new, they are plentiful.  Pistes are extremely well groomed and the skiing is well suited to intermediate skiers, with many pistes long and offering over 1000m vertical descent, particularly in the BKK sector.  There are some good green and blue runs, notably one long blue that leads all the way down the length of the Nockalm gondola.

The Snowfall…

The slopes of BKK tend to be shady, whilst those in St Oswald tend to be sunnier.  The BKK slopes hold their snow particularly well due to this direction, however the snow record in the whole of the BKK region is good, with all slopes covered by snow-making facilities.

Off the Slopes…

Your group will be based at the fantastic Blue Mountain Hotel, set in a stunning location in Verditz just 20 minutes drive from the slopes of BKK.  The hotel owners Paul and Alisha offer a comprehensive in-house après ski programme which alone will occupy your group.  This can include discos, karaoke, quiz, table-tennis, pool, games nights, torch-lit walks, sledging on old ski-slopes next to the hotel and more.  If you decide, you can venture into BKK or Villach in the evenings by coach.  BKK is famous not only for skiing, but also some wonderful spas, with some amazing indoor and outdoor thermal pools, in addition to water slides, waterfalls and massage jets.  Many groups rate the spa as a reason to visit alone.  Add this to the fantastic welcome given by Paul and Alisha, and BKK sees groups go back year on year.
